Moon Hopper Review - Lauren Hunter
F45, the fastest-growing functional training network, and not just here in the UK or in Australia where it all began, but globally. Offering both resistance and cardio sessions in 45-minute chunks, the network is renowned for its ability to have you looking forward to training and get fitter whilst shedding body fat. A couple of months ago I wrote a blog post where I explained the F45 ethos and reviewed their famous Renegade class at my local franchise, F45 Wandsworth, and you can have a read of that here.
This time I was back in the studio to review their newest class, Moon Hopper. I can’t tell you why it’s called that, I can only assume that it’s because the class will leave you floating on endorphins or give you that walking-on-air sensation after.
What is it?
Moon Hopper is a resistance class which, like all F45 sessions, is a 45-minute class based on functional movement. A combination of weights (kettlebells, dumbbells, plates and sandbags…) and bodyweight exercises are used to challenge all of your muscle groups. Although it’s not a cardio-focused class, it will still get your heart rate up, which the heart rate screens will show you if you choose to invest in a heart rate monitor.
The class is set up in 3 pods, with each pod consisting of 3 stations, but you stay on the same station twice before moving on. For the first time on each station, you’ll be working for 35 seconds and resting for 15 seconds. The second time on that same station, you spend 40 seconds working, followed by 30 seconds of rest.
This particular session saw us move through a range of muscle-burning exercises, including chest-press, kettlebell swing, pull-ups, press-up and dumbbell snatch. Not a single muscle was neglected, so don’t be too surprised if you’re a little sore the next day…
Why do it?
Umm…because it’s fun? If that’s not convincing enough, then the science backing the importance of resistance training should be. Among its many other benefits, regular resistance training can help to maintain bone density, thus reducing the risk of diseases such as osteoporosis. In addition, it can help you to build lean muscle mass, and the more muscle you have, the more fat you’re going to burn (and the more food you can eat…need I argue my case more?)
With at least 2 excellent trainers on hand to monitor your form and answer any questions you may have, you’ll be in safe hands and this will help you to feel confident enough to push yourself a little harder. The music will be loud enough to drown out that little voice that tells you to give up, as will the ongoing support from the coaches and fellow F45-ers.
I highly recommend you get yourself down to the studio to see what all the fuss is about, but be warned, once you start, you may find it hard to stay away..
